Our Vision for Mathematics
At Birchwood Junior School, we vow that every child will be a mathematician by the time they leave us in year 6, regardless of background or starting point.
For us, a mathematician understands the value of mathematics and has true fluency.
A mathematician thrives on the challenge of mathematics. They have the number sense to spot patterns across number, measurement, geometry and statistics.
Mathematicians understand that maths is like a network of linked ideas and use mathematical thinking to see how each new idea can be linked to one we already know. They have a toolkit of careful checking methods e.g. estimation or formal written methods. Trying out possible new theories through conjecture & reasoning, mathematicians then work to draw agree a generalisation based on proof. In particular, mathematicians love to solve problems. They seek out new ways of approaching problems, pushing their theories to failure so that can become not only accurate but efficient. The definition of mathematics, pattern spotting & problem solving are intertwined and it is this powerful skill set that will truly prepare our students for life in the 21st century.
At Birchwood Junior School, we are passionate about ensuring that all students feel like Maths is accessible to them. You enjoy what you're good at, and confidence is built by taking small, clear steps at a pace that works for you. Our curriculum is outlined below but please feel free to pop into school any time and ask to speak with our Maths lead Miss Burgess. She is always more than welcome to answer any questions, or provide the support you need for your child.
